Afenifere Leader Ayo Adebanjo is Dead? Fact Emerges

Afenifere leader, Ayo Adebajo, is still alive despite claims in some quarters, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), that he is dead

A fact-check report, which probed his rumoured death, showed that the viral claims about the nonagenarian was false

The report showed that the Afenifere leader was mistaken for Professor Ayo Banjo, former vice-chancellor of the University of Ibadan, who passed away recently

The claim on social media that the outspoken Afenifere leader, Ayo Adebanjo, had passed away is false.

According to Dubawa, an X user @RodemiF, in a now-deleted post, made the claim that the leader of the socio-political group died at the age of 96.

The X user wrote:

“Chief Ayo Adebanjo goes home @96. May his soul rest in peace. Amen”.

Some Nigerians, who appeared to believe his post, took to the comment section to express their condolences to the group and family of the Yoruba leader.

Is Ayo Adebanjo truly death?

However, findings by Dubawa, a fact-checking organisation, which vetted the claim, showed the X user’s post was inaccurate.

Further research showed that the claim was also debunked in a report by the Guardian newspaper.

In the same vein, Adebanjo’s aide, asked the public to disregard the rumour, as reported by Vanguard.

Misconception on Ayo Adebanjo’s death rumour

Checks showed that Professor Ayo Banjo, a former University of Ibadan vice chancellor, died at the age of 90 on Friday, May 24, 2024.

His death was announced a few days before that of Afenifere leader’s rumours surfaced on social media.

Findings showed some people mistook the former vice-chancellor for Adebanjo due to the similarities in their names.

The late University of Ibadan vice chancellor is Ayo Banjo, while the Afenifere leader bears Ayo Adebanjo. This is believed to have created confusion.
